These Places in Uganda Look Different in December

December is the month of the festive season, and it is also the time when the rain clears up in Uganda. The clear skies allow you to enjoy the lush green landscapes and the fascinating wildlife. You can enjoy activities like mountain gorilla trekking, chimpanzee trekking, bird watching and game drives. Remember that the end of the year is also peak season for domestic tourists because of the festivities. However, during December in Uganda, the days are warm, but the nights are cool. Also, as it’s a tropical country, expect some drizzle on your trip and prepare accordingly. Here are three Ugandan national parks that you must visit in December.

Bwindi Impenetrable National Park

Located in the Kanungu district of Uganda, the national park is engulfed in rainforests that accommodate over 400 plant species. It is mainly famous for housing one of the two subspecies of mountain gorillas, which you can only find in the rainforest. The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park hosts mountain treks for tourists to view the magnificent creatures in their natural habitat. Besides the mountain gorillas, you will come across elephants, buffaloes, bushbucks, black and white colobuses, L’Hoest’s monkeys and chimps. The rainforest also houses 220 species of butterflies and around 348 bird species, including the African green broadbill, which makes it a perfect spot for bird watching. The national park comprises a large number of threatened species; hence, the place is considered a conservation hotspot.

Kibale Forest National Park

The park is one of the three major destinations popular for chimpanzee trekking. It is located in the western part of Uganda in the Kabarole district, close to Fort Portal, the biggest town in the district. Visiting the Kibale Forest National Park in the dry season increases your chances of seeing the chimpanzees in their natural habitat and makes it easier for tourists to trek in the forest. Depending on the location of the primates, it can take about two to five hours to find them. The park houses over 350 plant species and nearly 375 bird species. You will also witness elephants, antelopes, bushbucks, African buffaloes, warthogs, leopards and lions.

Rwenzori Mountains National Park

The notable UNESCO World Heritage Site is located in Bundibugyo. The best time to visit is during the dry season in Uganda, from December to February and June to August. The park is mainly known for mountaineering, trekking, hiking and climbing tours. Thrill-seekers will have the time of their life in the Rwenzori Mountains National Park. There are camping facilities and huts available for hikers too. The national park also has clear climbing and trekking routes for visitors.
