4 Days Chimpanzee And Gorilla Tour
On this tour, we enter the world of our closest relative, the Chimpanzee, and encounter the most impressive of the great apes, the Mountain Gorilla. Our journey takes us through Kibale Forest, a lush habitat for birds, primates, and other mammals. We move onward into the depths of Bwindi Impenetrable Forest which sprawls over 331 sq kilometres, blanketing theatrical mountain formations that meet the edge of the western Great Rift Valley and the border of the Democratic Republic of Congo. It is here, in the remote Southwestern corners of the country that we will find true appreciation for the vibrant ecosystems of the tropical forests of Uganda.

Itinerary
After an early breakfast, we set off to Kibale Forest, arriving at your booked accommodation in time for us to rest and have lunch, before beginning our grand tour. After lunch we head to a briefing at the park headquarters and only then do we venture deeper into Kibale Forest. The nearly 800 sq kilometres of verdant, wet tropical forest are a habitat for 13 species of primates. Of these, we seek out the chimpanzee, with whom we share 99% of our DNA. With the help of the park guides, we will observe them in their protected home, a fascinating encounter with animals so familiar and yet so different. In the evening, we return to our lodge for dinner and a good night’s rest.
Accommodation: Rweetera Safari lodge

After breakfast and checkout, we drive to Bigodi Swamp, about 40 kilometres outside of Fort Portal town. These serene wetlands are known for the Blue Turaco bird, but it is home to over 200 species of birds. We will trek the swamp on foot for a primate walk to observe and learn about the eight species of primates that know Bigodi Swamp as home. After the walk, we head to Bwindi Impenetrable Forest, our next and most anticipated destination, and check-in for the night.

Today, we set out on foot into Bwindi Impenetrable Forest in search of Mountain Gorillas. Bwindi’s spectacular mountain formations and wild undergrowth nest a thriving ecosystem of diverse plants, mammals, and birds. We follow our guides’ lead, weaving and pushing through the undergrowth until we come upon a Gorilla family. Though we keep a respectful distance, there is a feeling of kinship and awe as we watch the families, little ones playing and discovering as the adults tend to them or groom, all the while keeping an eye on us. We leave this secluded world and move on to visit the Batwa, once known as “the keepers of the forest”, to learn about their rich history and how they have maintained their way of life in the forest. After, we return to our lodge for our final night.
We check out of our lodge after breakfast and drive out of the forest, perhaps reluctant to leave but invigorated by one of the rarest and most rewarding experiences nature offers. We stop for lunch at Igongo Cultural Centre at the Uganda Equator. We complete our tour as we re-enter the Northern hemisphere, homeward bound.
